Red Team narrowly defeats Blue Team, 15-12 in Wrestle-offs

In front of a packed crowd at the Fresno State Recreation Center, the Bulldog wrestling team held the Red vs. Blue Wrestle-offs on Saturday afternoon.
FRESNO, Calif. - In front of a packed crowd at the Fresno State Recreation Center, the Bulldog wrestling team held the Red vs. Blue Wrestle-offs on Saturday afternoon.
With the team score tied 12-12 entering the final match of the afternoon, the Red team came out with a 15-12 victory thanks to redshirt junior Khristian Olivas' 8-6 win over freshman Lawrence Saenz.
The Red team jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after a fall by Justin Mejia of Joseph Delgado in 4:10 and a 5-3 win in overtime by Jeremy Trinh over Robert Garcia IV.
The Blue team responded with four straight wins as Isaiah Hokit edged Jacob Wright, 3-2 at 157 pounds followed by Brandon Martino over Greg Gaxiola, 5-1 at 165 pounds.
Newcomer Ricky Padilla and Dominic Kincaid had a back-and-forth battle at 174 pounds as the match was tied at two apiece heading over to overtime. Each side notched escapes in the first tiebreaker and after no scoring on their feet, Padilla was able to keep Kincaid down for 30 seconds while managing to escape himself and come out with a 4-3 win.
Redshirt freshman Jackson Hemauer downed sophomore Angel Solis, 8-3 at 184 pounds to give the Blue team a 12-9 lead before Richie Brandt defeated Danny Salas, 6-3 at 197 pounds to even the score at 12 apiece.
Sophomore AJ Nevills wrestled an exhibition match at heavyweight against Clovis native and former American University All-American Ryan Flores defeating the 2007 Buchanan High School graduate, 7-3.
The Bulldogs get the 2018-19 regular season started next Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Rutgers Quad Meet in Piscataway, N.J. taking on Division III opponent Johnson & Wales at 7:00 a.m. PT, No. 14 Rutgers at 8:30 a.m. PT and close out the meet with another Division III foe Centenary (N.J.) at 10:00 a.m. PT.
