'Dogs lose tough battle to No. 20 North Dakota State, 21-20 in home opener

Fresno State came up just short against No. 20 North Dakota State falling to the Bison, 21-20 in its home opener on Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
FRESNO, Calif. - In a dual that saw bonus points in nine of 10 matches, it came down to the final match on Friday night at the Save Mart Center as the Bulldogs came up just short against No. 20 North Dakota State falling to the Bison, 21-20 in its home opener.
With Fresno State (3-3, 1-2 B12) leading North Dakota State (3-0, 1-0 B12) by three points entering the final match of the dual at 125 pounds, the Bison's Brett Fleetwood edged the Bulldogs' Robert Garcia IV, 12-0 to give the visitors' four team points and the one-point dual meet victory.
The 'Dogs and Bison each won five matches apiece with the Bulldogs notching four bonus point wins picking up a technical fall and three major decisions. NDSU countered with all five of its wins coming by bonus points collecting four major decisions and a technical fall.
How It Happened
With a crowd of 2,530 on hand at the Save Mart Center, the Bulldogs bounced back from an early defeat by Gary Joint at 133 pounds to win the following three matches and take a 13-5 lead on the scoreboard.
Sophomore 141-pounder Chris Deloza got the scoring started with a 12-1 major decision over Oakdale, Calif. native Nico Colunga. Deloza took an early 2-0 lead and broke the match open in the second period with a pair of takedowns and a two-point near fall for a 8-1 advantage. The Fresno native added another takedown in the third period and a point for riding time for his second major decision of the season.
No. 16-ranked Khristian Olivas kept the scoring going at 149 pounds with his first technical fall of the year blanking NDSU's Jaden Van Maanen, 16-0. Olivas used a takedown, reversal and three four-point near falls for the win.
Redshirt junior Isaiah Hokit made it three straight wins for the 'Dogs at 157 pounds with a 14-4 major decision over Nick Knutson as Hokit recorded six takedowns for his second major decision of the season.
The Bison trimmed the 'Dogs lead to 13-9 at 165 pounds as No. 12-ranked Andrew Fogarty used a critical four-point near fall and a point for riding time to record a 9-1 win over the 'Dogs Jacob Wright and pick up a crucial extra team point for NDSU.
After a short intermission, NDSU tied the match at 13 apiece with a major decision over the 'Dogs Dominic Kincaid at 174 pounds, but Fresno State bounced right back at 184 pounds as redshirt freshman Jackson Hemauer registered a 9-0 major decision with a pair of takedowns, a four-point near fall and a riding time point.
With Fresno State leading 17-13 with the three matches remaining, NDSU again tied the match with a major decision at 197 pounds as Cordell Eaton topped the Bulldogs' Danny Salas, 13-2 to knot the score at 17-17.
The Bulldogs again pulled ahead by three with a 1-0 win by No. 15 AJ Nevills at heavyweight as he edged No. 25 Brandon Metz with a third period escape as Nevills moves to 6-0 on the season.
Leading 20-17 heading into the final match, the Bison's Fleetwood, who came in ranked No. 22 by Trackwrestling, held Garcia IV off the scoreboard for a 12-0 win to give NDSUÂ the one-point dual meet victory.

Fresno State is back in action on Tuesday night competing in the second-annual "Battle on the Midway" wrestling showcase, presented by Left Coast Wrestling, taking on Stanford (1-0) on the flight deck of the famed aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego.
Gates are set to open at 6 p.m., with preliminary matches set to start at 6:30 p.m. and the main event featuring the Bulldogs and Cardinal will get underway at 7:15 p.m.
