Fresno State Wrestling battles Stanford in second annual Battle on the Midway

Fresno State Wrestling will take on Pac-12 foe Stanford on Tuesday night in the second annual Battle on the Midway in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -Â Fresno State Wrestling will battle Pac-12 foe Stanford on Tuesday in the second annual Battle on the Midway.
Presented by Left Coast Wrestling, the 'Dogs will take on the Cardinal on the flight deck of the famed aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego at 6:30 p.m.
"This is big for the entire sport of wrestling to be able to take part in such a unique event like this on one of the most famous aircraft carriers ever commissioned," said Bulldog head coach Troy Steiner. "It was a great honor to take part in the first-ever Battle on the Midway and we're looking forward to coming back this year to face a very talented opponent in Stanford."

Second Annual Battle on the Midway
In the inaugural Battle on the Midway hosted on the USS Midway on Nov. 21, 2017, the Bulldogs fell 24-12 to Air Force in its first-ever dual as members of the Big 12 Conference.
The 'Dogs collected three wins as Khristian Olivas won by technical fall at 149 pounds, Greg Gaxiola recorded a major decision at 157 pounds and AJ Nevills got a decision at heavyweight.
Scouting Stanford
The Cardinal will wrestle their first Division I dual of the season against the Bulldogs on Tuesday after their lone dual of the season came against San Francisco State on Nov. 10 saw Stanford win 41-5 winning nine of 10 matches, including six by bonus points.
Stanford went 7-5 in 12 duals last season with a 3-1 mark in Pac-12 duals and placed fourth at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships with 47.5 points.Â
The Cardinal have a young squad that features 13 freshmen, nine sophomores, five juniors, five seniors and one graduate student and return 2017 All-American Paul Fox at 157 pounds along with 2018 NCAA qualifiers Gabriel Townsell (125 lbs.), Mason Pengilly (141 lbs.) and Nathan Traxler (197 lbs.). Townsell, Fox and Traxler are all ranked for the Cardinal.

The 'Dogs hosted Stanford on Feb, 3, 2018 winning four of 10 matches against the Cardinal as Khristian Olivas, Isaiah Hokit and Richie Brandt all notched wins by decision while Josh Hokit recorded a fall of David Showunmi in 5:45.
Fresno State vs. Pac-12 foes
Fresno State will wrestle its first of four Pac-12 opponents this season after also playing four Pac-12 foes a season ago. The Bulldogs defeated Cal Poly, 29-13 at home and lost to CSU Bakersfield, Oregon State and Stanford.
The 'Dogs will host Oregon State on Jan. 31 at the Save Mart Center and travel to CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly on Feb. 9.
'Dogs in the national rankings
A pair of Bulldogs continue to find themselves in the national rankings as Nevills has moved up to No. 13 by The Open Mat, No. 15 Trackwrestling & FloWrestling, No. 16 by WIN Magazine and No. 19 by InterMat in the latest rankings available on Nov. 13. At 149 pounds, Olivas is ranked No. 16 by Trackwrestling. Nevills and Olivas each qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Bulldogs open year two at the Save Mart Center
In a dual that saw bonus points in nine of 10 matches, it came down to the final match on Nov. 16 at the Save Mart Center as the Bulldogs came up just short against No. 20 North Dakota State falling to the Bison, 21-20 in its home opener.
With Fresno State (3-3, 1-2 B12) leading North Dakota State (3-0, 1-0 B12) by three points entering the final match of the dual at 125 pounds, the Bison's Brett Fleetwood edged the Bulldogs' Robert Garcia IV, 12-0 to give the visitors' four team points and the one-point dual meet victory.
The 'Dogs and Bison each won five matches apiece with the Bulldogs notching four bonus point wins picking up a technical fall and three major decisions. NDSU countered with all five of its wins coming by bonus points collecting four major decisions and a technical fall.
'Dogs open Big 12 action in Colorado
Fresno State got Big 12 dual meet action started on the road on Nov. 11 with a 34-4 win at Northern Colorado winning nine of 10 matches before traveling to Air Force later that day where they were edged, 19-15 by the Falcons.
Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds, Jacob Wright at 165 pounds, Jackson Hemauer at 184 pounds and AJ Nevillsat heavyweight each won both of their matches as Olivas and Nevills each pinned their Northern Colorado opponents.
Look back at Rutgers Quad Meet
Winning two of three duals on opening weekend, the Bulldogs defeated a pair of Division III opponents in Johnson & Wales, 38-8 and Centenary, 33-9 while falling to No. 13 Rutgers, 30-6 on Nov. 3. The 'Dogs won eight matches in both dual wins with six coming by bonus points in each dual.
AJ Nevills went a perfect 3-0 with a fall, technical fall and a 3-2 overtime win while 125-pound Robert Garcia IV made his Bulldog debut winning his pair of matches with a 4-3 win over Shane Metzler of Rutgers and a 13-5 major decision over Jacy Jones of Centenary.

Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
