Bulldogs hit road for Big 12 dual at No. 21 Iowa State

Fresno State visits Iowa State for the second consecutive season looking for its first-ever dual meet win over the Cyclones.
FRESNO, Calif. -Â Coming off a shutout win at home over California Baptist last week, the Fresno State wrestling team hits the road for a Big 12 dual at No. 21 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon.

Scouting No. 21 Iowa State
The Cyclones are coming off a 29-7 dual meet win at North Dakota State in its Big 12 opener on Wednesday night in Fargo winning eight of 10 matches against the 23rd-ranked Bison. ISU is 2-0 in home duals with wins over MAC opponents SIU Edwardsville, 37-3 on Nov. 11 and Ohio, 33-6 on Dec. 16. Iowa State's lone dual meet blemish came at Iowa on Dec. 1 falling 19-18 to the then-No. 3 ranked Hawkeyes as the Cyclones won five matches.
ISU's lineup features as many as six ranked wrestlers led by redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus, a three-time All-American at Missouri, who comes in 10-1 on the season. Redshirt sophomore Jarrett Degen is ranked as high as No. 8 by Trackwrestling at 149 pounds after qualifying for the 2018 NCAA Championships a year ago after finishing third at the Big 12 Championships.
Redshirt freshman Austin Gomez has also gotten off to a strong start to his ISU career checking in No. 9 nationally at 133 pounds posting an 11-1 record with his only loss coming in the Southern Scuffle finals to No. 4 and undefeated Daton Fix of Oklahoma State, 6-3.Â
'Dogs in the national rankings
Three Bulldogs continue to rise in the national rankings as Khristian Olivas is featured in five rankings coming in as high as No. 15 by Trackwrestling followed by No. 16 by Intermat, No. 17 by FloWrestling and WIN Magazine and No. 18 by The Open Mat. Jackson Hemauer checks in 19th by WIN Magazine and No. 20 by Trackwrestling at 184 pounds. Finally, AJ Nevills continues to be ranked high at heavyweight checking in No. 15 in the Trackwrestling polls.
Bulldogs return to AmesÂ
For a second straight season, the Bulldogs will head to Iowa State for a Big 12 dual after narrowly falling 26-22 to the Cyclones last season. The 'Dogs won five of 10 matches with Olivas winning a thrilling 15-14 win over Degen while Josh Hokit posted a pin in 1:43 at 197 pounds and Dominic Kincaid took home a 7-4 win over Danny Bush at 174 pounds.
All three return to the lineup on Sunday as the two teams also met at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 13, 2018 with the 'Dogs again picking up five victories, including Nevills topping Gannon Gremmel, 7-6 as the two are expected to meet again on Sunday.
'Dogs shutout California Baptist
Shutting out its first opponent since 2005, the 'Dogs won all 10 matches last Thursday against California Baptist blanking the Lancers, 43-0 at the Save Mart Center. Fresno State used a pair of falls, a technical fall and two major decisions to roll to its first shutout since blanking Menlo College, 47-0 on Jan. 4, 2005.
Redshirt freshman emerging in lineup
A pair of redshirt freshman continue to emerge for the Bulldogs in the lineup as Jacob Wright at 157 pounds and Jackson Hemauer at 184 pounds lead the team with 15 wins apiece. Wright is 4-3 in duals with Hemauer joining Nevills with a team-best eight dual meet victories.
Fresno State finishes seventh at the 2018 Midlands Championships
Four 'Dogs placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes helping Fresno State place seventh as a team at the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30.
Leading the way was a pair of fourth-place finishes from Hemauer and Nevills while Olivas and Hokit at 197 pounds each placed seventh.
Hemauer won four matches while knocking off No. 5 Christian LaFragola from Brown twice. Nevills received three medical forfeits on Sunday to advance all the way to the third place match where he fell to No. 6 seed Matt Stencel from Central Michigan, 10-5.
Olivas claimed four wins with a technical fall and a fall on Sunday pinning Henry Pohlmeyer of South Dakota State in 4:12 on Sunday in his seventh-place match. Hokit claimed a team-high six wins after losing his opening round match to Tanner Sloan, an unattached wrestler from South Dakota State, with four straight decisions on Saturday, a overtime win to start Sunday and a fall over Brett Perry of Buffalo in the seventh place match.
Hokit returns to the mat after finishing football season
For a second straight season, Hokit has made the quick transition from the gridiron to the wrestling mat as he has already wrestled an astounding 15 matches this season posting a 12-3 record since returning from the football field after helping the Fresno State football team defeat Arizona State, 31-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 15.
The Clovis native went 6-2 at the Midlands Championships and 5-1 at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20 and has totaled eight wins by decision, two major decisions, a technical fall and a fall while two of his three losses came by decision and his other loss came by fall to nationally-ranked Jacob Warner of Iowa.
Hokit, who went 9-8 last season at 197 pounds and finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships, came up only one place short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships a year ago and the Mountain West champion in football looks to add being an NCAA Championship qualifier to his resume this March.

Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
