The Diamond 'Dogs won their fifth game in a row on Friday with a 10-2 win over San Diego State to open Senior Weekend.
Fresno State (31-13-1, 16-7-1 MW) won its fifth-straight game and matched its season-high with 17 hits in the contest scoring in double-digits for the ninth time this season. Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum led the way on Friday with a single-game career-high four hits, scored a run and drove in his Mountain West-leading 57th RBI.
Senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey matched his career-high with three hits, coming a triple shy of the cycle while smacking his sixth home run of the season (watch). The Mountain West Player of the Week added four RBI and two runs scored to continue his hot hitting. Redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda added three singles and scored a run for his 15th multi-hit game of 2019.
On the mound, Jensen cruised to his ninth win of the campaign tossing seven innings limiting San Diego State (30-20, 14-10 MW) to four hits, one earned run, two walks and added five strikeouts.
It was Jensen's fifth-straight start of seven or more innings while it was his seventh-straight start with five or more strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman southpaw Robbie Peters came in to throw the final two innings to match his longest outing of the season.
How It Happened
Getting off a fast start, the Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the first batting around the order and collecting six hits in the frame.
Senior center fielder Zach Ashford led off with a single through the left side and Arruda followed two batters later with a single through the other side of the diamond. As he has all season, Tatum came through with runners on base with a RBI single through the right side driving in Ashford to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.Â
Dempsey continued the 'Dogs big inning with a base knock through the left side to bring in Arruda while designated hitter Emilio Nogales kept the scoring going with his sixth double of the season roping a ball to left-center to plate Dempsey and Tatum for a 4-0 lead. The scoring was completed with Nogales coming in to score after a Zach Presno single and a throwing error by Aztec shortstop Angelo Armenta.
The 'Dogs tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth on Dempsey's second RBI of the night on a groundout to first that drove in catcher Carter Bins for a 6-0 lead.
A 1-2-3 inning by Jensen in the fifth brought the 'Dogs back up to the plate and a single by right fielder Auston Chastain put one on for Ashford who blasted his third long ball of the season to right field (watch) for a 8-0 lead.
The Aztecs broke up Jensen's shutout bid in the seventh with a RBI groundout by catcher Ryan Orr, but the 'Dogs quickly responded with Dempsey's two-run blast to left-center in the eighth.
With the 'Dogs holding on to a nine-run lead, SDSU completed the scoring in the ninth with a RBI single by right fielder Mike Jarvis.
