The Bulldog wrestling team hits the road this weekend for a pair of duals against conference foes taking on Northern Colorado on Friday evening before making the short trip to No. 10 Wyoming for a Saturday evening dual in Laramie.
FRESNO, Calif. - After hosting its first Big 12 dual last Friday, the Bulldog wrestling team hits the road this weekend for a pair of duals against conference foes taking on Northern Colorado on Friday evening before making the short trip to No. 10 Wyoming for a Saturday evening dual in Laramie.
"We have to focus on one match at a time and look forward to competing this weekend," said head coach Troy Steiner on facing the Bears and Cowboys. "We are seeing some great progress from the guys, but we still have a long way to go until the Big 12 & NCAA Championships."

Scouting Northern Colorado
Now in its third season in the Big 12, Northern Colorado enters Friday's dual with the Bulldogs with a 2-5 overall dual record and a 1-1 mark in the Big 12. UNC defeated Iowa State, 22-20 on the road on Jan. 5 and fell at Oklahoma in its latest action last Sunday (Jan. 21) falling 28-10. Like the 'Dogs, Northern Colorado has also defeated Cal Poly this season beating the Mustangs, 21-20 at home on Jan. 19 and has also squared off with CSU Bakersfield falling at home 22-12 on Jan. 14.
The Bears feature three ranked wrestlers in 133-pounder Rico Montoya, 165-pounder Keilan Torres and 184-pounder Dylan Gabel as all three have 14 or more wins on the season and each qualified for the 2017 NCAA Championships.Â

Ranked in the top 20 in all four national polls, Wyoming checks in No. 10 as a team in the Trackwrestling rankings, No. 11 by FloWrestling, No. 13 by WIN Magazine and No. 20 by Intermat and feature six ranked wrestlers.
Leading the way for the Cowboys at 141 pounds is senior Bryce Merideth, a two-time All-American, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation. 133-pound redshirt freshman Montorie Bridges and 157-pound senior Archie Colgan are also both ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes. Colgan and 165-pound junior Branson Ashworth, who is 26-3 on the season, each qualified for the 2017 NCAA Championships.
On the season, Wyoming sports an 8-3 overall dual record with a 2-2 mark in the Big 12 defeating Iowa State, 24-14 on Dec. 9 and North Dakota State, 32-6 on Jan. 20 and dropped duals to Oklahoma State, 20-15 and South Dakota State, 20-18. The will be only the second home dual of the season for Wyoming and the lone match of the season held in the Arena-Auditorium as the Cowboys typically wrestle duals in the UniWyo Sports Complex.

Gaxiola notches first fall of season as 'Dogs pick up three wins in Big home opener vs. Utah Valley
Sophomore 157-pounder Greg Gaxiola recorded his first fall of the season last Friday in 0:49 against Utah Valley's Raider Lofthouse. Gaxiola was one of three 'Dogs to notch wins in the dual as redshirt sophomore Khristian Olivas notched his seventh major decision of the season with a 13-5 win over Matthew Ontiveros while heavyweight AJ Nevills stayed a perfect 14-0 in dual meet action with a 7-3 win over Dustin Dennison.
Two 'Dogs in the first of four NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel Rankings
Olivas and Nevills debuted in the top 30 of the first NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel released on Jan. 18 that helps to determine who will qualify for the 2018 NCAA Championships as Olivas checks in No. 22 at 149 lbs. and Nevills ranks No. 28 at heavyweight.
Three more rankings will be released throughout the regular season before it is determined in early March who will qualify for the national tournament set to be at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on March 15-17.
'Dogs defeat Cal Poly for first Division I victory
Thanks to seven individual victories, including four bonus-point wins, the 'Dogs notched their first win over a Division I opponent on Jan. 4 defeating Cal Poly, 29-13 at the Save Mart Center. Greg Gaxiola notched a 20-6 major decision at 157 pounds before Isaiah Hokit kept it going at 165 pounds with a 23-8 technical fall win. The dual wrapped up with a pair of falls from Josh Hokit and AJ Nevills at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to seal the win over the Mustangs.
Fresno State Wrestling returns to the Valley
On Nov. 17, 2017, a historic day in Bulldog Wrestling history and in front of 6,840 Red Wave supporters, the third-largest dual in program history, Fresno State Wrestling returned to the Valley as the 'Dogs battled Big 10 foe Illinois at the Save Mart Center.
The 'Dogs, who fell in the dual 33-10, came out with three dual wins as Olivas got Fresno State on the board with a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds over nationally-ranked Eric Barone while Gaxiola followed it up with a 9-5 win at 157 pounds over another nationally-ranked foe in Eric Langenderfer.
The final win for the Bulldogs came at heavyweight as Nevills topped Duece Rachal, 7-5 with a late takedown in the third period.

The 'Dogs return home next weekend for a dual against Pac-12 foe Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Save Mart Center at 5 p.m. before turning around and traveling to Oregon State for a dual on Monday, Feb. 5 in Corvallis, Ore., at 7 p.m.
