Bulldogs down Johnson & Wales & Centenary at Rutgers Quad Meet

Fresno State Wrestling got the 2018-19 season underway on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers Quad Meet picking up a pair of dual meet wins while falling to host and No. 13 Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Fresno State Wrestling got the 2018-19 season underway on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers Quad Meet picking up a pair of dual meet wins while falling to host and No. 13 Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Troy Steiner. "It was great to get out on the mat and see where guys are at. We will learn from this and continue to improve heading to Colorado next weekend."
The Bulldogs opened the morning with 38-8 win over Johnson & Wales, who are ranked No. 3 in Division III, winning eight of 10 matches with six 'Dogs earning bonus points.
The 'Dogs then shifted over mats to wrestle Rutgers winning a pair of matches falling 30-6 to the Big Ten Scarlet Knights. The Bulldogs then finished off the afternoon with a 33-9 win over Division III Centenary (N.J.) as the 'Dogs repeated its morning performance winning eight matches with six coming by bonus points.
Johnson & Wales Recap
One of seven redshirt freshman to make their Bulldog wrestling debuts on Saturday, Brandon Martino led off the 'Dogs with a 16-2 major decision win over Nick Munsch to give the 'Dogs a lead they would not give up. Ricky Padilla, a transfer from Air Force, made his debut at Fresno State a memorable one with a fall of Nick Caracappa in 5:44 to give the 'Dogs a 10-0 lead.
A third straight Bulldog made their debut at 184 pounds as redshirt freshman Jackson Hemauer downed Khamri Thomas, who is ranked No. 3 in Division III, 6-0 to push the 'Dogs lead to 13-0. A back-and-forth battle ensued at 197 pounds as redshirt junior Richie Brandt took a 8-6 lead after an escape, but a takedown and a riding time point gave No. 4 (D-III) Michael DiNardo a narrow 9-8 win.
Sophomore heavyweight AJ Nevills got the 'Dogs back on track with a fall in 4:03 to put the Bulldogs ahead 19-3 and after redshirt freshman Jeremy Trinh lost at 125 pounds, the 'Dogs won the final four matches, three by bonus points, to secure a 38-8 win.
Redshirt freshman Gary Joint took a commanding 14-2 lead before recording a fall in 6:16 at 133 pounds. Sophomore Chris Deloza edged No. 6 (D-III) Joe Ferinde, 8-5 before Khristian Olivas made quick work of his Johnson & Wales opponent with a fall in 0:55 at 149 pounds. Wrestling at a new weight this season, redshirt junior Isaiah Hokit closed out the dual with a 12-3 win over Malik Rasheed.
Rutgers Recap
Wrestling their first of two duals this season against Big Ten opponents, the 'Dogs notched back-to-back wins at heavyweight and 125 pounds.
Nevills won a hard-fought battle with a 3-2 win over Christian Colucci in the fourth overtime tiebreaker as Nevills was able to escape the hold of the Rutgers' fourth-year junior while keeping him down. Redshirt freshman Robert Garcia IV made his Bulldog debut at 125 pounds and delivered a 4-3 win over Shane Metzler.
Garcia's win trimmed the Rutgers' lead to 13-6, but the Scarlet Knights won the final four matches for the 30-6 win.
Centenary Recap
Winning eight matches with six by bonus points, the 'Dogs overcame an early injury default by Martino at 165 pounds to win eight of the dual's final nine matches.
Redshirt junior Dominic Kincaid made his season debut with a 10-3 win at 174 pounds while Hemauer, Nevills, Garcia IV, Joint and Olivas all notched bonus point wins.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Wright was the final Bulldog to make his debut closing out the dual with a 17-6 major decision at 157 pounds.
Team Notes
- Fresno State used 14 wrestlers in the quad meet. Eight of the 14 made their Fresno State debuts with seven coming off redshirt freshman seasons and Ricky Padilla made his debut after transferring from Air Force.
- The Bulldogs went 18-12 overall on the day.
- Nevills went a perfect 3-0 while Garcia IV went 2-0.
- Hemauer, Olivas, Joint, Deloza all won two matches apiece.
- The official attendance for the quad meet at the Rutgers Athletic Center was 2,424.
