Olivas & Nevills remain alive after day one of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite

The Bulldogs won a total of 15 matches on Friday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and will wrap up competition on Saturday with Khristian Olivas and AJ Nevills still alive in the consolation bracket.
LAS VEGAS - The Fresno State wrestling team completed day one of the 2018 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite on Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center with a pair of Bulldogs advancing to day two on Saturday.
"A great effort today, I was really proud of the guys," said head coach Troy Steiner on the 'Dogs performance. "If we continue to fight like that and wrestle like we did today, we are going to keep getting better. Each guy has stuff they need to work on and we will continue to improve. Overall, I was very pleased with how the guys wrestled and we need to continue to get better."
Redshirt junior 149-pounder Khristian Olivas and sophomore heavyweight AJ Nevills, each of whom qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships a year ago, are still alive in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning as they will look to win their first match of the day which will guarantee them a top eight spot in their respective weight classes.
Six of the 10 Bulldogs who wrestled on Friday notched at least one win as Olivas, Isaiah Hokit at 157 pounds, Jacob Wright at 165 pounds and Jackson Hemauer at 184 pounds all won three matches apiece. Nevills won two and Ricky Padilla at 174 pounds won one.
After dropping his opening round match to No. 3 seed Grant Leeth of Missouri, 7-4, Olivas battled back with three straight bonus point wins recording a fall, technical fall and major decision to stay alive in the consolation bracket and will look to keep his run strong finish going meeting No. 7 seed Austin O'Connor of North Carolina on Saturday.
Nevills, seeded eighth in the tournament, was the lone 'Dog to make the quarterfinals with a 8-1 win over Ian Butterbrodt (Brown) and a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Niko Camacho (American) set up a matchup with top-seeded Gable Stevenson of Minnesota. The Gophers' true freshman topped the Bulldog sophomore 15-6 to send Nevills to the consolation bracket where he will face No. 5 seed Joseph Goodhart of Drexel on Saturday morning.
Hokit picked up a medical forfeit, technical fall and a major decision before bowing out a late-second takedown by Wyoming Dewey Krueger handed the Clovis native a narrow 4-3 defeat. Wright recorded a fall and two major decisions as he fell to a pair of ranked opponents. Finally, Hemauer registered two of his three wins by bonus points with a major decision and a technical fall as he dropped a hard-fought battle to Central Michigan's Jordan Atienza, 10-8 to see his tournament end.
The Bulldogs will wrap up competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite with Olivas and Nevills wrestling on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
