The Bulldogs won a pair of matches over No. 8 Minnesota on Saturday evening and return to the Save Mart Center on Jan. 3 to take on Cal Baptist.
FRESNO, Calif. - Welcoming a top 10-ranked opponent in Big Ten foe Minnesota into the Save Mart Center on Saturday evening, the Bulldog wrestling team battled the Golden Gophers tough winning a pair of matches in a 31-6 loss in front of an announced crowd of 2,597.
How It Happened
With the dual starting at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Jeremy Trinh made his Bulldog home debut and battled No. 5 Sean Russell tough before falling by a technical fall, 16-1 in 4:01.Â
Facing a 5-0 deficit in the dual, Gary Joint looked to get the 'Dogs back on track at 133 pounds facing No. 8 Ethan Lizak, a two-time All-American and a 2017 NCAA finalist at 125 pounds. Lizak jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period, but Joint was able to cut the Gophers' lead in half with a takedown in the second period, but that would be as close as Joint would get as Lizak won the dual, 9-2.
The Bulldogs got on the board at 141 pounds with a highly-entertaining 13-11 win by sophomore Chris Deloza as the Fresno native took a 6-4 lead after the first period using three takedowns and increased his lead to 8-4 with a two-point near fall. A reversal and a takedown by the Gophers' Brent Jones tied the match at eight apiece, but Deloza answered right back with a reversal of his own and a two-point near fall to take his lead back to 12-8.
An escape and a takedown by Jones cut the margin to 12-11, but a point for riding time by Deloza gave the Bulldog a two-point win.
With Minnesota leading 8-3 in the dual, the Gophers' won a hard-fought battle at 149 pounds as No. 20 Tommy Thorn defeated the 'Dogs No. 23 Khristian Olivas, 3-1 in overtime as Thorn was able to secure a takedown with 23 seconds remaining in the first sudden victory period.
Another close match followed at 157 pounds between the 'Dogs Isaiah Hokit and Minnesota's Miles Paton. Paton secured an early takedown, but a pair of escapes by Hokit tied it at 2-2 heading into the third period. It was all Paton from there though as he used a eight-point third period and a riding time point for a 11-4 win.
Taking a 14-3 lead into intermission, Minnesota handed the two 'Dogs two more hard-fought losses at 165 and 174 pounds as Jacob Wright fell 9-5 to No. 25 Carson Brolsma and Ricky Padilla lost 6-4 to No. 16 Devin Skatzka at 174 pounds.
The 'Dogs won their final match of the dual at 184 pounds as redshirt freshman Jackson Hemauer defeated No. 24 Owen Webster, 4-1. The Wisconsin native secured a first period takedown and a second period escape for a early 3-0 lead. Webster was able to collect one point to get within a takedown of tying the match, but Hemauer fought him off and used 4:22 of riding time for the win.
The dual concluded with Danny Salas falling 15-0 in 6:14 against Brandon Krone at 197 pounds and the 'Dogs forfeited heavyweight to make the final score 31-6.Â
Notables
- Deloza's 13 points scored in his match were a season high. He had scored 12 twice in a pair of wins over North Dakota State and Stanford.
- Hemauer improves to 10-3 overall on the season and 7-1 in duals.
- Webster is the second ranked wrestler Hemauer has knocked off this season joining then-No. 12 Christian LaFragola of Brown on Nov. 30 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite.
