'Dogs return to Big 12 action at Iowa State Friday

After a pair of duals over the weekend against Pac-12 competition, the Bulldog Wrestling team returns to Big 12 action on Friday night traveling to the Midwest to take on Iowa State at 5 p.m. PT.

Scouting Iowa State
Much like the 'Dogs, the Cyclones have competed in a large of duals so far this season sporting a 7-8 overall record with a 2-5 mark in the Big 12 picking up wins over West Virginia (25-16) and North Dakota State (21-20) while falling to Wyoming (24-14), Northern Colorado (22-20), Oklahoma (21-16), Oklahoma State (31-3) and South Dakota State (30-15).
The two teams met previously this season at the Virigina Duals with the Cyclones topping the 'Dogs, 25-16, despite five wins from the Bulldogs. Iowa State, who is 2-4 at home on the season, has three-ranked wrestlers in the national polls in redshirt freshman Ian Parker, Jarrett Degen and Sam Colbray at 141, 149 and 197 pounds, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore Markus Simmons at 133 pounds and redshirt junior Marcus Harrington at heavyweight have a team-high 19 wins while redshirt sophomore Chase Straw (157 lbs.) and redshirt senior Dane Pestano (184 lbs,) have both competed in a team-high 14 duals.

'Dogs face off with Iowa State for second time this season
Fresno State picked up five wins over Iowa State in the two teams' previous dual meet at the Virginia Duals in January, but the 'Dogs gave up bonus points in four of five matches falling by a final score of 25-16.
Potentially five of the same matchups could take place on Friday as nine of the 'Dogs who wrestled in that dual are anticipated to compete in the dual while Iowa State has five and up to seven of the same wrestlers in their probable starting lineup.
The biggest victory for the 'Dogs came at 197 pounds as Josh Hokit scored a 7-2 overtime win over nationally-ranked Sam Colbray while Sean Williams recorded one of his three bonus-point wins of the season.

Bulldogs compete against pair of Pac-12 opponents
The 'Dogs competed against their third opponent from California this season after previously seeing CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly at home facing off against Stanford at the Save Mart Center last Saturday falling to the Cardinal, 27-15 despite four wins. Olivas, Isaiah Hokit, Brandt and Josh Hokit all recorded wins as Josh notched his second fall of the season.
Fresno State then hit the road for a quick turnaround traveling to Oregon State for a dual on Monday night where they ran into a stout Beaver team as Isaiah Hokit was the only 'Dog who was able to pick up a win winning 6-3 over Rodney Williams.
Olivas ranked No. 20 by FloWrestling national rankings
With his nine-match winning streak snapped on Monday night at Oregon State, Khristian Olivas continues to be ranked by one national poll this week as FloWrestling has him ranked No. 20 at 149 pounds. The Clovis native currently has a 24-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in dual meets.
Martino places third at Edinboro OpenÂ
Freshman 174-pounder Brandon Martino went 4-1 on his way to third place honors at the Edinboro Open last Saturday hosted by Edinboro University recording a pin, technical fall and two decisions while dropping an 11-5 decision in the semifinals for his one loss. Freshman 125-pounder Jeremy Trinh went 1-2 while Danny Salas, also a freshman, posted a 2-2 mark at 197 pounds.
Fresno State Wrestling to host Alumni Gathering on Feb. 17
Fresno State Wrestling will host an alumni gathering at The Downtown Club on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 5-11 p.m. Making its return after an 11-year hiatus this winter, Fresno State Wrestling is in its 46th season as all former Bulldogs are invited to this event prior to the Bulldogs' home finale versus Oklahoma State on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Registration is $50 per person/couple and checks can be mailed to Dennis DeLiddo (559-260-8865) at 1684 West Fir Ave., Fresno 93711 made payable to the Valley Regional Training Center.
'Dogs notch first Big 12 victory at Northern Colorado; fall at No. 10 Wyoming
The Bulldogs picked up their first Big 12 dual victory in program history on Jan. 26 at Northern Colorado topping the Bears, 20-19 on criteria as the 'Dogs edged UNC 60-57 on total team points after the dual ended in a tie at 19-19. Five 'Dogs recorded wins in the victory, including bonus point wins from AJ Nevills at heavyweight with a fall and Khristian Olivas tacked on a major decision, while Sean Williams, Dominic Kincaid and Richie Brandt won by decision. The following day, the 'Dogs suffered a 40-6 defeat at No. 10 Wyoming as the Cowboys won seven matches by bonus points while Olivas and Nevills picked up wins.
Two 'Dogs in the first of four NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel Rankings
Olivas and Nevills debuted in the top 30 of the first NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel released on Jan. 18 that helps to determine who will qualify for the 2018 NCAA Championships as Olivas checks in No. 22 at 149 lbs. and Nevills ranks No. 28 at heavyweight.
Three more rankings will be released throughout the regular season before it is determined in early March who will qualify for the national tournament set to be at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on March 15-17.
'Dogs defeat Cal Poly for first Division I victory
Thanks to seven individual victories, including four bonus-point wins, the 'Dogs notched their first win over a Division I opponent on Jan. 4 defeating Cal Poly, 29-13 at the Save Mart Center. Greg Gaxiola notched a 20-6 major decision at 157 pounds before Isaiah Hokit kept it going at 165 pounds with a 23-8 technical fall win. The dual wrapped up with a pair of falls from Josh Hokit and AJ Nevills at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to seal the win over the Mustangs.
Fresno State Wrestling returns to the Valley
On Nov. 17, 2017, a historic day in Bulldog Wrestling history and in front of 6,840 Red Wave supporters, the third-largest dual in program history, Fresno State Wrestling returned to the Valley as the 'Dogs battled Big 10 foe Illinois at the Save Mart Center.
The 'Dogs, who fell in the dual 33-10, came out with three dual wins as Olivas got Fresno State on the board with a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds over nationally-ranked Eric Barone while Gaxiola followed it up with a 9-5 win at 157 pounds over another nationally-ranked foe in Eric Langenderfer.
The final win for the Bulldogs came at heavyweight as Nevills topped Duece Rachal, 7-5 with a late takedown in the third period.
