Fresno State Wrestling opens season at Battle on the Midway

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Wrestling team will get the 2019-20 season underway on Friday at the third-annual Battle on the Midway in San Diego.
Presented by Left Coast Wrestling, the 'Dogs will take on No. 4 Wisconsin and Navy in the morning at 9 a.m & 11 a.m., respectively on the Broadway Pier before battling No. 23 Army in the evening on the flight deck of the famed aircraft carrier USS Midway at 6:30 p.m.
"This is such a boost for the entire sport of wrestling to be able to have such a unique event like this on one of the most famous aircraft carriers ever commissioned," said Bulldog head coach Troy Steiner. "We're honored to have been invited to compete in the first two Battles on the Midway and we're looking forward facing Army at this year's event."

Scouting the Badgers
Wisconsin enters the season ranked No. 4 in the FloWrestling rankings and returns four NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a season ago along with two 2019 All-Americans in 165-pound redshirt junior Evan Wick and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Trent Hilger.
In addition, the Badgers have also added two-time All-American and 2018 NCAA champion Seth Gross at 133 pounds to a team that finished 21st at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Wisconsin has seven wrestlers in the preseason rankings with Gross checking in first, Wick at No. 2, Hilger at No. 6 along with redshirt seniors Tristan Moran and Cole Martin each in the top 15 at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.

Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy returns two NCAA Tournament qualifiers in junior Tanner Skidgel at 165 pounds and senior Spencer Carey at 174 pounds this season after finishing fifth at the 2019 EIWAÂ Championships. The lone team the 'Dogs have faced of the three, Fresno State will face Navy for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Under sixth-year head coach Joel Sharratt, Navy tied for 37th at the NCAA Championships last season.

Scouting the Black Knights
Army brings back six NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a season ago in seniors Trey Chalifoux (125 lbs.), Lucas Weiland (157 lbs.), Cael McCormick, Ben Harvey (174 lbs.) & Noah Stewart (184 lbs.) along with sophomore Corey Shie in 141 pounds. Shie, Weiland, McCormick, Harvey and Stewart are all in the preseason rankings with Harvey ranked as high as seventh by Intermat at 174 pounds.
The Black Knights placed fourth at the 2019 EIWA Championships and 36th at the NCAA Championships.
Bulldog Headlines
In the previous two Battle on the Midway's hosted on the USS Midway, the Bulldogs fell 24-12 to Air Force on Nov. 21, 2017 and fell last year to Stanford, 22-15 on Nov. 20, 2018.
The 'Dogs collected wins in four of the first seven matches in 2018 taking a 15-12 lead, but dropped the final three matches of the dual. Jackson Hemauer, AJ Nevills, Gary Joint and Chris Deloza all recorded wins for the Bulldogs with Joint registering a technical fall, Nevills with a major decision and decisions by Deloza and Hemauer.
Fresno State vs. Big Ten/EIWA foes
The 'Dogs will wrestle their fifth dual against a Big Ten opponent since returning to the mat in 2017-18 after facing Illinois and Minnesota two seasons ago and Rutgers and the Golden Gophers last season.
This will be the Bulldogs' first-ever dual against Wisconsin and will be the first of three against a Big Ten opponent in 2019-20 joining Rutgers (Nov. 15) and Illinois (Feb. 21).
The 'Dogs have also faced five EIWA foes squaring off with Bucknell (2-0), Columbia (2-0), Hofstra (0-1), Lehigh (0-1) and Penn (0-1)Â
'Dogs in the national rankings
A pair of Bulldogs who will wrestle on Friday are ranked in three polls with redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Gary Joint ranked No. 15 by Trackwrestling, No. 18 by WIN Magazine and No. 23 by FloWrestling. Fellow redshirt sophomore Jackson Hemauer checks in No. 18 by WIN Magazine & FloWrestling and No. 27 by Trackwrestling at 184 pounds, but he will wrestle at 174 pounds on Friday.
Red defeats Blue in Intrasquad
The Red team defeated the Blue team, 24-13 in an Intrasquad dual on Saturday winning six matches picking up falls by redshirt freshman Hunter Cruz at 184 pounds and junior AJ Nevills at heavyweight and getting decisions by Robert Garcia IV (125 lbs.), DJ Lloren (141 lbs.), Greg Gaxiola (149 lbs.) and Hemauer (174 lbs.).
The Blue team earned three wins by decision from Gary Joint (133 lbs.), Adam Kemp (165 lbs.) and Ryan Reyes (197 lbs.) with a major decision by Jacob Wright at 157 lbs.
Pledge for Pins
Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
