Bulldogs battle tough on day two of Virginia Duals; Nevills completes perfect weekend

The Bulldogs won five matches against Big 12 foe Iowa State at the Virginia Duals on Saturday. The 'Dogs return home to host Utah Valley on Friday at 7 p.m. for its Big 12 home opener.
HAMPTON, Va. - The Bulldog wrestling team concluded action at the Virginia Duals hosted at the Hampton Coliseum on Saturday taking on ACC opponent Virginia in the morning before winning five matches against Big 12 foe Iowa State in the afternoon.
With the two programs meeting in dual meet action for the first time ever, the 'Dogs were able to pick up three wins over the No. 19 Cavaliers as redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Khristian Olivas broke open a narrow 2-1 lead after two periods to score four points in the third and added a point for riding time to notch the 'Dogs first win defeating Sam Krivus, 7-2.
After three more 'Dogs were hit with setbacks, freshman 184-pounder Angel Solis got the Bulldogs back on the winning track building a 5-1 lead before locking up Michael Battista for a fall in 5:36 for his third fall of the season. Freshman AJ Nevills stayed perfect on the weekend in the final match recording his third fall of the Virginia Duals pinning Tyler Love in 6:01 as the 'Dogs dropped the match, 29-15.
After a short break, the Bulldogs got back on the mat against conference opponent Iowa State in the afternoon splitting the dual's 10 matches as each side won five apiece. Redshirt senior Sean Williams got things started with a 15-3 major decision of Cyclones' Sinjin Briggs recording five takedowns of the true freshman.
A pair of falls for the Cyclones followed before Olivas won his second match of the day with a highly-entertaining 22-11 major decision win over Dante Rodriguez . Tied at 10-10 after two periods, Olivas exploded in the final period for 12 points recording a pair of takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls for the win as the Clovis native finished the weekend 5-1.
The 'Dogs tacked on three more wins in the dual as redshirt sophomore Isaiah Hokit defeated Skyler St. John, 8-4 at 165 pounds jumping out to a 6-1 lead before holding off St. John for the win. At 197 pounds, dual-sport athlete Josh Hokit continues to make his transition from football to wrestling picking up his third win of the weekend with a 7-2 victory over Samuel Colbray in overtime.Â
Action concluded with Nevills overcoming an early 3-2 deficit in the first period to Gannon Gremmel to tie the match at 6-6 with a reversal. The freshman heavyweight logged 1:51 of riding time giving him a 7-6 victory and a perfect 6-0 mark on the weekend. Iowa State claimed the dual, 25-16 as it was the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs as ISU has claimed all six meetings.
Fresno State returns home for its Big 12 dual meet home opener on Friday hosting Utah Valley (5-3, 2-1 B12) at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center.
