MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Competing against their second Big 10 opponent of the season, the Fresno State wrestling team fell 38-7 at No. 10 Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at the Maturi Pavilion.
"It was great to compete in front of this environment against one of the nation's top programs. We will certainly learn a lot from this experience," said head coach Troy Steiner.
Starting the dual at 133 pounds, Minnesota's No. 8 Mitch McKee made quick work of the 'Dogs Trevor Williams taking him down, working a four-point nearfall before getting a pin in 1:36 as the Gophers took a quick 6-0 lead. A rematch from a matchup in last weekend's Cliff Keen Invite at 141 pounds, Minnesota's No. 10 Tommy Thorn increased the Gophers' lead to 12-0 with a fall over the 'Dogs Chris De Loza in 1:01.
The Bulldogs got on the board at 149 pounds as No. 25 Khristian Olivas picked up his second straight and fourth major decision of the season defeating the Gophers' Hunter Marko, 14-2 to improve to 9-1 on the season. Olivas took a quick 6-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and a four-point nearfall and after allowing an escape to start the second period extended his lead to 11-1 with a pair of takedowns and an escape. Another takedown for Olivas and 3:42 of riding time sealed the win as the 'Dogs cut the lead to 12-4.
At 157 pounds, freshman Greg Gaxiola suffered a 14-4 major decision to No. 12 Jake Short as the Gopher wrestler built a 10-2 lead after the first period and despite two escapes from Gaxiola, he was unable to get any closer. The 'Dogs Isaiah Hokit faced another nationally-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds facing No. 9 Nick Wanzek falling 8-0 as Minnesota took a 20-4 lead at intermission.
Valley RTC athlete and Nebraska alum Anthony Abidin and former Gopher All-American Jayson Ness wrestled a freestyle exhibition at intermission as Ness won 10-0.

A close match at 197 pounds between the 'Dogs Richie Brandt and Minnesota's Bobby Stevenson went the way of Stevenson in the third period as Stevenson took a 9-2 lead after two periods to win by a final score of 19-5.
The 'Dogs second and final win of the afternoon came from heavyweight AJ Nevills as the Clovis native used a third-period takedown and a two-point nearfall to defeat the Gophers' Rylee Streifel, 5-1 and improve to 11-2 overall on the season.
