'Dogs fall to CSU Bakersfield in front of strong Red Wave contingent

The Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center on Jan. 4 taking on Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
After opening the season in front of a packed house of nearly 7,000 against Illinois, the 'Dogs squared off with Route 99 rival in front of 3,704 winning two matches on the night as freshman heavyweight AJ Nevills improved to 10-2 on the season defeating Mark Penyacsek, 7-1 and the night closed with freshman Khristian Olivas securing a major decision, his third of the season, with an 11-1 win over Kalani Tonge.
With the two programs meeting for the 27th time, the dual meet started at 157 pounds as freshman Greg Gaxiola and Roadrunners' redshirt senior Coleman Hammond took a scoreless match into the third period before Hammond notched an escape and takedown and added a point of riding time to secure a 4-1 win.
No. 18-ranked Lorenzo De La Riva extended the Roadrunners' lead to 7-0 at 165 pounds with a 13-2 major decision of sophomore Isaiah Hokit despite Hokit taking an early 2-0 lead, but was unable to score anymore points in the match. A hard-fought battle at 174 pounds went the way of CSUB as redshirt junior Bryan Battisto narrowly edged the 'Dogs Dominic Kincaid, 4-2. Kincaid took an early 2-0 lead, but a reversal in the second period by Battisto gave him a 3-2 lead as he added a point for riding time to notch a win.
After CSUBÂ notched the lone fall of the night at 184 pounds to take a 16-0 lead, sophomore Richie Brandt battled No. 12 Matt Williams tough at 197 pounds as the two scrapped to a 3-3 tie at the end of two periods. Unfortunately, Williams choose bottom to start the final period managing to get an escape and added a takedown and a point for riding time for the 7-3 win.
Coming out of a short intermission with energy, Nevills gained a quick 2-0 edge in the first period, adding a reversal and an escape in the second and tallied nearly four minutes of riding time for a 7-1 win getting the 'Dogs on the board.
After senior Sean Williams took an early 4-1 lead with a pair of takedowns at 125 pounds, CSUB's Sergio Mendez scored the final nine points, including seven points in the third period, to win 10-4. With the Roadrunners winning the next two matches, Olivas capped the night with an 11-1 major decision using two takedowns, a four-point nearfall to break open improving to 8-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Big 10 opponent No. 10 Minnesota (2-1) for a dual at Maturi Pavillion set for 11 a.m. PT. Watch all the action on BTN Plus & FloWrestling.
