Sophomore 157-pounder Greg Gaxiola recorded his first fall of the season on Friday evening as he was one of three 'Dogs to secure wins in Fresno State's Big 12 home opener.
FRESNO, Calif. - Despite picking up three wins on the evening, the Fresno State Bulldog wrestling team fell 26-12 to the Utah Valley Wolverines on Friday at the Save Mart Center in the 'Dogs Big 12 home opener.
The 'Dogs (3-11, 0-2 B12) secured wins in the dual from freshman heavyweight AJ Nevills, redshirt sophomore Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds and sophomore Greg Gaxiola at 157 pounds as Olivas and Gaxiola were able to tack on bonus points.
With the dual beginning at 174 pounds, Utah Valley (6-3, 3-1 B12) was able to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead with an 11-5 decision from Kimball Bastian over the 'Dogs Dominic Kincaid. Kincaid was able to hold a brief 4-3 lead, but too much offense from Bastian proved to much to overcome for the Bulldog.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 9-0 with back-to-back decisions at 184 and 197 pounds as redshirt sophomore Richie Brandt saw his first action of the season at 184 pounds. Facing his former team, Brandt was able to take a 9-8 lead early in the third period with five straight points getting an escape, takedown and a two-point near fall , but UVU redshirt freshman Gary Jantzer scored the final four points to secure the 12-9 win. At 197 pounds, the 'Dogs Josh Hokit battled tough to a 3-3 draw after the first period, but was unable to generate anymore offense falling 9-4.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard at heavyweight as Nevills kept his perfect dual meet record in tact improving to 14-0 on the season as the Clovis native built a 5-0 lead before holding on for a 7-3 win.
Utah Valley won the next three matches to take a commanding 22-2 lead in the team score as the 'Dogs lost a team point after the 133-pound match for misconduct. No. 6 Taylor LaMont recorded a fall at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman and Clovis native Durbin Lloren notched a 6-1 decision at 133 pounds and Matt Findlay had a major decision over Chris De Loza at 141 pounds before the 'Dogs were able to get back on the winning track.
Another former Wolverwine, OIivas was able to get revenge on his former team as he notched his seventh major decision on the season improving to 21-3 overall with a 13-5 win over Fresno native Matthew Ontiveros. Falling behind 5-2 after one period, Olivas reeled off 11 straight points getting a reversal and a four-point near fall in the second period and added two points for stalling, a two-point near fall and a point for riding time in the third to give the 'Dogs four team points.
Following right behind him, Gaxiola was able to notch a quick takedown of Raider Lofthouse before turning him to record a fall in 0:49. It was Gaxiola's first fall of the season and eighth bonus point win as he improves to 13-10 on the season.
The dual wrapped up with redshirt sophomore Isaiah Hokit facing No. 16 Demetrius Romero at 165 pounds as Romero was able to notch a 13-5 win for the major decision.
The 'Dogs continue Big 12 action on the road next weekend for a pair of duals traveling to Northern Colorado (2-4, 1-0 B12)Â on Friday, Jan. 26 before making the short trip to No. 11 Wyoming (7-3, 1-2 B12) on Saturday, Jan. 27.
